A rare wine club focusing only on Merlot. If you are or know a Merlot lover who doesn't love Napa prices, this is a no-brainer decision.
We like that Coastal Vineyards hasn't forgotten what a great wine Merlot can be and that they're offering a wine club featuring Merlot.
We'd like them to publish what wines they've shipped to customers in the past and we'd like it if the website were more user-friendly.
We don’t know of any other Merlot-only wine clubs, and certainly this is the only one focusing on Paso Robles Merlot. While we enthusiastically support a Zinfandel wine club featuring Paso Robles wines, and a Syrah wine club featuring Paso Robles wines, we’re having a hard time rallying support for a Merlot wine club focusing on Paso Robles wines. There isn’t much of it grown in Paso because it’s a cool-climate grape and it doesn’t do really well in a hot place like Paso.
Perhaps this is one of Coastal Vineyards Wine Clubs’ clubs that includes wines from all around California to present better quality wines. To be clear, we’re not Merlot haters... in fact we like it even though it’s considered out-of-favor right now (thank you, Sideways) and find it to be an excellent value due to it’s lingering unpopularity.
As with all wine clubs offering ongoing subscriptions with shipping and handling costs built in, we wish they wouldn’t. It’s appropriate for pre-paid subscriptions (especially for gifts) but when we’re getting regular wine shipments we’d prefer to know how much of what we’re paying for is wine and how much is shipping and packaging expenses.

If Cabernet is King Arthur, then the mysteriously magical Merlot can be none other than Merlin himself. This wine is loved around the globe and especially deep within the inner chambers of the wine world for being such a playfully, mind-boggling enigma, wrapped up in a perplexing conundrum, hidden away deep, deep within in a mystifying equivocation of mouthwatering ecstasy.
Some collectors and connoisseurs say that our Merlot is the ultimate balance point where the very best qualities that make up the perfect red wine comes together with the very best qualities that make up the perfect white wine. We think those people are pretty darned smart!
Cherry red to plush plum purple in color, Merlot grapes ripen fairly early and so they provide lower tannins and higher sugar levels which produces a wine that is softer, more supple, rounder and much more approachable than most red wines. With a slightly higher alcohol content, this medium to dark red wine has a nose and palate that is distinctively fruity in character, tasting of black currant, raspberry, plum, cherry and sometimes even mint. This Merlot is Awesome!
This is the perfect choice for those that want two bottles of Merlot delivered each month!
