South African wines could very well be the next wave of “it” wines in the United States. In styles that blend winemaking techniques of France and the unique terroir of South Africa, these wines are under-appreciated (and under-imported) in the U.S. so they’re still relatively inexpensive. This is one of very few South African wine clubs we know of (the others are provided by Worthwhile Wine Company) and we’re glad to see Coastal Vineyards offer one.
All of the wines are sourced through a particular importer, Cape Legends. This means that with this club you won’t get to sample everything South African wine has to offer, but you will get to experience a high-quality importer’s view of South African wines. Very often trusting an importer’s “palate” is an excellent way to find new wines you’ll enjoy. Considering how rare it is to find South African wines at grocery stores or Trader Joe’s, we think this wine club is still a great opportunity to explore South African wines.
